Our Library
The Library is a calm, work-orientated environment where all students and staff are welcome to read, study and relax throughout the school day. We have a large variety of resources to enjoy and study: fiction and non-fiction books, DVDs, CDs and magazines.
Students can borrow most resources for a month at a time.
We also have e-readers, loaded with a variety of popular e-books, available to use in the Library during Reading Lessons and break times. Talking books are available on CD to borrow or listen to in the library.

Library Support and Education
All Key Stage 3 students have a fortnightly Reading Lesson in our Fiction Room, where they are encouraged to read for pleasure and are introduced to new authors, series and genres by the Library staff and their own peers.
Students are allowed to explore the library and encouraged to read any material that interests them.
The Library is regularly used for private study by our sixth form students. Students have access to laptops and the printer/copier, and are shown how to use library catalogues and on-line databases such as JStor.
Many are working towards their Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and will receive sessions delivered by the Librarian to support their research skills, referencing and writing.
The Library team have extensive knowledge and experience with university level writing and research, which is used to support sixth form students throughout their A-level studies at Backwell.
Authors, poets and other speakers are invited in to speak and work with all year groups.
Additionally, writing and reading competitions run regularly throughout the year with students encouraged to show off their literary skills.
The Library also operates the Backwell Book Award, which invites all year groups to create a short list and eventually crown a winning novel from an array of fiction from the previous 18-months.
Previous winners of the award have become favourite novels amongst students at Backwell, with the award helping to introduce students to a wide range of genres and authors.
