A warm welcome to Backwell School

I am  absolutely delighted that your child will be joining us at Backwell this September. Moving to secondary school is an exciting milestone, and we are really looking forward to welcoming you into our community.

I can still clearly remember my own first day at “big school”. I remember the excitement of discovering new subjects, the slightly oversized uniform, and the anticipation of joining clubs and activities. I also remember those first-day nerves about finding friends — and the excitement of making new ones, some of whom are still close friends today. As a parent myself, I also understand that this is a big step for the whole family.

For many of you, this may be the first time you have waved your child off to secondary school. While it is a new experience for you, welcoming new students each September is something we have been doing for many years. Our staff understand what the transition can feel like. We know what students sometimes find challenging, and we know how to help make those first days and weeks easier. We are ready to support those who feel a little overwhelmed and to channel the enthusiasm of those who arrive full of excitement.

One of the most important things I have learnt over 19 years of welcoming new students is the value of communication. That is why we will keep in touch with you throughout the transition process. This will include us visiting you at your Primary School. During transition week we will invite you into school, and over the coming months we will share information to help you prepare for September. You will also find plenty of useful details on our website.

However, we know that sometimes you may want to speak to someone directly. You might have a question not covered online, something that is easier to discuss in person, or simply need a bit of reassurance. Please don’t hesitate to contact us. Working in partnership with families helps us support and educate your child in the very best way — not just before September, but throughout their time at Backwell.
