Young lovers, Maria, and Tony are caught between prejudice and warring street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, in this seminal retelling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Transported to 1950s New York City, we explore themes of love, prejudice, and the destructive nature of gang violence. Exhibiting the tragic consequences of hatred and the power of love to transcend societal divisions.

The hugely talented performers at Backwell School have blown audiences away with their incredible production of West Side Story.  Performed on four sell-out nights (6 - 9 February 2024), the cast crew can be infinitely proud of this sensational production.

Directors, Emily Merry and Steve Clark commented:

Ruby, who played Maria said:

“Getting this role was a dream come true and I am so thankful to everyone that made it happen. I was absolutely terrified to audition, but I am so glad I did, as this experience has been one of the best things I have ever done.”

Leo, who played Riff said:

“Being in West Side Story was an amazing experience to say the least. To perform this brilliant musical was a huge honour and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Everything from rehearsals, learning lines, the orchestra…, it was all fantastic. Riff is such a fun character to play, and I am grateful for the experience. Riff is so bright and full of life and theatrics but is also a deeply flawed individual and that is what makes him so interesting and unique to play.” 

 

One of the great things about productions at Backwell School, is that EVERYONE has the opportunity to get involved.

As part of the rehearsal process, the cast and crew showcased the production to all the students and staff in school This ensured nobody missed out seeing this incredible production This also allowed the cast and crew to promote the show and enthuse students to get involved in future productions at the school.

Whether an actor, dancer, instrumentalist, set designer, member of the tech crew, photographer etc, there are opportunities available in all areas.
